Triceratops is believed to have primarily consumed low growth vegetation such as ferns and shrubs. Scientists think that the large number of teeth indicated that they consumed large quantities of fibrous plant material each day, and that their extensive tooth batteries were necessary to replace those damaged by wear and tear. Currently, there are two theories regarding the function of Triceratops horns. One theory suggests that the horns were used for self-defense in combat against other dinosaurs, particularly the T-Rex, which was known as a mortal enemy. The second theory proposes that the horns were used for limited combat purposes and were more likely utilized during courtship rituals. Despite the name "Triceratops," which means "three-horned face," this dinosaur actually only had two proper horns. The third horn was made of soft proteins and was not a true horn, and its purpose is still uncertain to scientists. Another interesting fact about Triceratops is that approximately one third of its total length was its skull. A typical Triceratops was about 26 feet long, with a skull approximately 7 feet long. It could weigh anywhere from 6 to 12 tons and measured over 10 feet in height. Throughout its lifetime, the Triceratops would have around 400 to 800 teeth, constantly replacing them as they wore out.
